Is Complex Life Inevitable in the Universe?

Is complex life forms sentient life inevitable in the universe? So you've got the Carl Sagan's saying yes billions of ET. The Goulds Francis Viola say no that you'll probably get microbial life throughout the universe. Some will argue for direction and its inevitability some will say you only get direction if you somehow have the right set of contingent events. For us who are theistic evolutionists we see that the biological framework within a belief that God is the ongoing creator so the directionality comes from God not from nature itself.
