The Importance of Empathy in Interpersonal Emotion Regulation

Some authors would say that empathy is actually the very first step for interpersonal emotion regulation to happen. Do you think this research could help children develop social competence when they're lacking it for any reason? I believe that, you know, this can have practical applications. Children with autism, especially, I mean, high functioning autism, and kids with ADHD could benefit as well from such interventions.
