The four ministers were indicted on charges of treason in october seventeenth. The trial was unfolding slowly, though, and the verdict was not due to be delivered until december 20. In a final anxious meeting the night before the verdict was due to be handed down, the ministers finally settled on a plan. The defendants would be secretly removed from the luxembourg palace and returned to the fortress at vancenne before the guilty verdict was handed down. But when lafayette went ahead with this secret plan it came as a shock to the ministers who felt betrayed by their other colleagues. Eventually they agreed that only regular troops of the national guard should be stationed in the garden of the Luxem
