What Is Bulk Billing?
The only specialty which doesn't have a public option is our general practice colleagues. If you need to see a GP specialist, unfortunately in Australia it is considered outpatient care and therefore there isn't a public outpatient service which covers GP specialists. So you will need to pay privately and get rebated through the federally funded Medicare rebate system. This is where it gets a little bit confusing to bear with me because many patients think the doctor's wage comes directly from Medicare. It doesn't. That is, when you see your GP specialist, they charge for their time - similar to a tradesperson or accountant charging for their time. And the Medicare rebate is the patient's rebate, which is returned to them
