mechanism design is both a abstract idea and a concrete research genda. It's very much about moving away from this kind of high modernist idea of knowing where we're going, but rather designing institutions that we can just release and trust the process to happen more organically. The hiachian idea was precisely that sort of thing. But in the process of doing that, it had actually assumed a lot that was wrong about what it means for us to allow things to emerge.
