In the 1880s, New York State's conservation movement began to basically upend the traditional practices of many farmers who also were foragers in the region. The push to quote unquote protect land in this region came from not these farmers, but rather outside elites who sought to protect the land from its own residents. They're white. It's rich white people. But actually, I don't really have the time to do this story full justice. There's no price for it if you steal it and don't get caught.
