The Battle of La Isabella

In the spring of 1494, reports started coming in from the Cebal gold mining region that the formerly helpful indigenous people were abandoning their posts. This prompted Columbus to send one of his captains on the first of what would later become known as pacification missions. Alonso Aheda captured three local leaders who he then led back to La Isabella in chains. When the prisoners arrived at La Isabella, Columbus personally ordered that they should all be publicly beheaded. In the estimation of Bartolome las Casas, Aheda's campaign and Columbus' summary executions were a dark turning point in relations between the Europeans and the first people of the island.
