Two augusti were dead, one at the hands of an ex augustus. Constantine had snuck hin through the back door. maxentius controlled italy and africa even though he operated in no legitimate capacity. The only man who might be able to make sense of it all was diocletian. He figured that the time had finally come for him to throw his weight behind some kind of settlement which would get the tetrarchy working again.
