Hitler initially expressed a willingness to go along with this plan, but only on the condition that a new reichstag election be called. The rest of january and the first half of february saw an elaborate waiting game as hindenburg vacillated over whether to run for re election. He did not want to be the candidate of the centrest democrats, of the s p d and the centre party. He was contemptuous of those people. But wondered if the right wing had passed him by. It was not until a coalition of veterans groups declared their support for their former commander, that hindenburg announced he would run. Hitler then went ahead and declared his own candidacy
