Theocracy and the Church

The church from the beginning was a new sort of politics, which both was and wasn't competing with the existing ones. By saying Jesus is Lord it's quite clear it means Caesar isn't. But when then Caesar decides three or four centuries down the track that so many of his subjects have become Christians that he wants to get on board with that, that's a very dangerous and risky moment. The answer has to be, okay, so what's this going to look like? And presumably it means creating a wise and safe environment in which the church can do what it does best.
