The Doctrine of Operation X

For officers who aren't experienced, that's the reflex action. Let's pull out the doctrine and run with that. But if the doctrine is not the best it could be, then you probably can go very wrong. A good example to my mind comes from Matis and his Marine Division in Iraq in 2003. What they did was come up with building blocks whereby all of our regiments went through command post exercises as map and model exercises. It happened to be the Colorado River but what it meant was no plans for my first contact with the enemy.
