One of the tenets of the Agile Manifesto is customer collaboration over contract negotiation. It's easier to interact more when you have a small set of audience and you can build with them in a more collaborative way. As your audience grows, the feedback loops are slower. And that's where having a more conservative approach in terms of the design of the API is very important.
