In most civilized countries, freedom of speech is taken as a matter of course. We are so accustomed to it that we on it as a natural right. But this right has been acquired only in recent times and the way to its attainment has lain through lakes of blood. Voltaire may not have been ready to sacrifice his life for free speech, but many others have been willing to pay with their life or freedom the right to speak their minds. I wanted to find out who these people were and what motivated them. Do those who have fought for free speech across the aches have something in common, despite the many different courses their speech was exercised in favor of? Were they all heroic,
