Rich Barsell: It's really helpful to say John is doing something different, which I think is sometimes missed in Revelation scholarship. What you get in the final form is he is describing most everything he's seeing through the lens of what the prophets have said and seen before. He says if God has revealed himself to both Isaiah and John, then we should expect a resemblance between what he's seeing. And so like Isaiah, he sees the throne room, he describes it in very similar ways or Daniel gets this vision of the heavenly son of man and the ancient of days.
