Even the cleverest programmer can only put in a finite number of things. When you explore the space of possible things you could ask it, you're exploring an exponentially large space. If actual AGI existed, its effects upon reality would be unmistakable and impossible to hide. But still, we've got a long way to go if what the system claims it's doing is diametrically the wrong thing.
