There's this sort of long isolationist tradition. George Washington's argument was we should have no foreign entangling alliances, right? So the idea of getting involved in what people quickly began to realize was this terrible total war. People wanted nothing to do with it. Every man who really loves America will act and speak in the true spirit of neutrality.
