The Rise of the Sun Belts
By the mid-60s, international markets for manufactured goods are beginning to come really oversupplied. Germany and Japan start producing cheap goods that can penetrate previously impenetrable U.S. markets. Most well-placed multinationals kind of retreat up the supply chain. So they're benefiting from massive competition among all their suppliers. But when you look at it in aggregate, what you see is that growth of the supply chain type industries does not balance out the decline of the rust belts.
