I think there is a genuine bond between those characters. I think for tom, he saw like both a rival and an ally in gregg. It's this really strange amalgam of abuse and friendship and mutual exploitation. Conner is so rarely a player, it's kind of interesting that i think that tom and gregg's friendship has become the show's emotional centre to me.
