What Is Man, the Better?
An untimely birth is better off than he, for it comes into vanity and goes into darkness. Sorrow is better than laughter; by sadness of countenance, the heart is made glad. A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of birth. The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. And oppression makes the wise man foolish: a bribe corrupts the mind.
