Joseph Smith kept many of his plural marriages a secret from his wife before he properly convinced her that this had been God's will all along. It wasn't until 1843 that Emma finally accepted polygamy. She said that she would only sign off on a new marriage if she herself chose the women which became a kind of Mormon tradition afterwards. But when Emma did finally choose two women for Joseph, turned out Joseph had already married them.
