In the 60s and 70s scientists started a whole new idea of what kind of intelligence might be as something that was super performative. Stafford beer, who is this totally bonkers and brilliant cybernetician thought it would be disastrous if these machines were incapable of adapting to their surroundings. He came up with this this notion of an automated factory which in his mad diagrams was a huge system of inputs that at the heart had some kind of adaptive function. The book focuses on how children can learn complex mathematical functions by playing games like quadratic equations or hot and cold game right now.
