How I Discovered Poetry
i wanted to show it's written for young people, ok? And i wanted them to have a sense of what it was like to grow up in this kind of family in the fifties. I wondered if you would just read the last poem in this collection how i discovered poetry. For instance, that after i close my book and turn off my lamp, i say to the dark, give me a message i can give the world. Afraid there's a poet behind my face, i beg until i've cried myself to sleep....
