Hopkins framed his defense as a series of answers to 14 queries he had reportedly been asked. He responds to the first by basically saying that if he did steal the devil's book wasn't that something that he should be commended for rather than judged. It's also in the earlier queries that Hopkins says his knowledge of witchcraft came from his own experience which he describes as quote yet the surest and safest way to judge by.
