How to Refer a Patient for Surgery
UCSD doctors say patients should be referred to centers that do the surgery and let them make the decision. Patients typically remain intubated, go from the OR to the ICU, usually get extubated the next morning. Their limitation is no heavy lifting for about eight weeks after surgery until they're sternum heels. We also recommend lifelong anticoagulation in these patients.
