The Importance of New Words in English
In the 17th century, apathy entered English from Greek via Latin and French. In terms of philosophy, it could sometimes be a positive thing - synonymous with tranquility. My favourite probably is academy (from name of grove where Plato taught) It's in a suburb of Athens, and you can see it by driving around on Google car. Jonathan: Can we also say that if new words arrive, are these new concepts and therefore new ideas into the minds of English-speaking peoples? Laura: I would call this Greek envy, effectively, porting Greek unnecessarily into English.
