The Ideal View of Athenian Women
Pericles' funeral oration was a call to all Athenians to devote themselves fully to the idea of Athens' greatness. His purpose seems to be to counter suggestions that an easygoing polis like Athens could not compete successfully in war with a highly regulated militarized society such as Sparta. Pericles concludes his speech by reminding those present that Athens will pay for the upbringing of the children of the dead.
