Britannia would remain a lucrative corner of the empire until it was abandoned in the four hundreds. South of britannia and across the pyrenees from gaul lay the iberian peninsula, which the romans called hispania. Long in the roman orbit, it was actually one of the last territories in the empire to be truly pacified by marcus agrippa. Its gold and silver mines were the best in the known world; its fertile countryside made Hispania a centre of olive oil and wine production.
