When the economy starts to go down, if i'm a bank and i'm looking at someone to lend money to and a corporation, i wont be less likely to take a chance on somebody if they can't really assure me that this is going to work. Which means there's a lot less scope for corporations to raise prices. And also, this works on an economy wide basis, but we'll come back to that with the unemployment, the reserve army of the unemployed that you mention.
