In 523, a new king had ascended to the throne of Himyar. Yusuf Dounuus was Jewish and announced that all Christians in his kingdom should either convert or be killed. News of these atrocities offended Justin, and he negotiated for their return. The future Empress of Byzantium would rise from gutter woman to become emperor's wife. In two weeks time we'll return to the conflicts in the east and west with our story of religious turmoil in Arabian desert.
