The Role of Gravity in Supernovae
The number of stars in the universe that will go supernova is a small fraction. The other way similar but happens via a different path. It's all about having enough mass. If you weren't big enough to begin with, if you were sort of a smaller star like our star, you just would have ended up with a white dwarf.
