By the early twentieth century, this is a mostly african american neighborhood. In fact, the famous music hull shuffle along debute in 19 21 at dailys at 60 third street and broadway. The area also fostered a community of musicians that would venture near by, and eventually up to harlem and play. A musical icon comes from san juan hill. Young felonious monk grew up in the streets here and graduated into the harlem night club scene just a young man.
