The History of the Dollar Exchange Rates
The dollar was pegged to gold at that point. It was fixed at $35 and it was redeemable, at least for central banks. By the late 1960s, it was obvious that the system was no longer sustainable. The U.S. emerged in the 1980s as entirely dominant enough to win the Cold War without a showdown with Soviet Union.
