In ancient times, there were three points upon which you were necessarily going to be a member of the stoa and recognized as a stoic. You were going to have to believe that the world was a supremely rational, good and divine organism. And then finally, in ethics, that virtue was the only good. So when we're talking about stoicism in modern times, we have to have agreement about what stoicism was in ancient times. If we can't have that agreement, there's no point in even having any further discussion, because we can turn stoicism into whatever we want it to be.
