The Amygdala and Emotions
The amygdala is a subcortical structure, it's kind of a little bulbous shape. It's located near the prefrontal cortex but a little bit below it and sort of behind, closer to the middle of the brain. Human patients with bilateral lesions to the amygdala do not show normal fear responses or report fear experiences from external stimuli. But interestingly they do when they're exposed to internal stimuli that elicit fear responses such as induced suffocation.
