The High Five, the History of the High Five
The high five, by all consensus, was invented in the mid-70s in Southern California. It's not part of our cultural knowledge that it's new, you know? It's not even 50 years old. But it was invented by the man who's recognized as the first openly gay, major league baseball player, Glen Burke. He was on deck to bat in a pretty momentous game because Dusty Baker, who had just won the World Series, by the way, as the coach of the Astros.
