The Importance of Apologies

Last weekend, I was in a wedding for my brother-in-law. Not sure why I was invited to be a groomsman as we don't have that type of relationship. Three days later, my wife received a text from my father-in- law explaining that I need to apologize to the family. Was it a dumb comment? Sure, but enough to have a sit down and apologize to my whole family. It's not, in my opinion, what should I do?
