Science does speak metaphorically a lot of the time. It's a useful way to talk about really abstract or complicated processes. Richard Dawkins sold a lot of books, but also got into a lot of trouble for entirely one of his most arguably most famous books, the selfish gene. When you use a metaphor, there are some implications, especially if you're talking not to other scientists, but to the general public.
