When the Latin-derived French word Valene was absorbed by English during the early Middle Ages, it became the word for the most common type of feudal peasant. Many people believe that Valenes were the descendants of Cain, mankind's first murderer according to the Old Testament. As an extension of their cursed destiny, it was believed that Valenes outright deserved their lives of servitude and were hellbound from the start.
