The most popular thing that these guys sold were oysters. You could buy oysters from a guy in a little oyster stand on the street, or directly out of the boat. And because new york was this port city and thriving, it also had great access to oysters. Yes, some people had to have their stomachs stapled. In fact, they were eating oysters for breakfast, lunch and dinner. i imagine in an oyster saloon, they were paring that up with some rancid beer.
