The Story of Thanksgiving in America

Americans are taught that the pilgrims met a Native American tribe in 1621. They invited members of the tribe to join them for a celebratory feast. But this is not true and other groups held Thanksgiving feasts 70 years earlier. In 1817, New York became the first state to make Thanksgiving an official holiday.
