The History of Animal Welfare

The first child abuse case in the United States took place in 1874. A little 10 year old girl named Mary Ellen McCormick was beaten horrifically by her adoptive mother slash guardian. No one could really do anything because there weren't any laws regarding this issue. So eventually the little girl's case was taken to the American Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals. The ASPCA had been founded in 1866 and largely been concerned with protecting horse cart horses in New York City.
