When the virus gets turned on humans what really gets upgraded is not our intelligence but we're made much more empathic. I found that a quite interesting way of thinking about the deficiency of human beings. We can dehumanize the idea of having this virus which would essentially forcibly humanize or rehumanize the other so that you can't just write them off as them. That's a big genre trope that I've always had a problem with and so the indirection of the virus to humans in children time it breaks that down so you can't turn something else into them in same way.
