In 16 33, the king appointed a priest named william laud as the new archbishop of canterbury. He embarks on an aggressive programme to beautify and embellish the churches. And in particular, he insists on moving the communion tables where the eucharist is performed. The traditional catholic teaching is that when you bless the eucharistic host, it transsubstantiates into the body of christ. So there's a great symbolic significance in where and how you perform this sacrament.
