Is the Credit System Helping Scientists to Work on the Right Questions?

It takes a bit of mathematics to show that the winner takes all thing in particular is helpful. By by giving scientists credit for discoveries you give them an incentive to spend their time doing things that are more likely to be interesting and valuable. And it's interesting to think of the credit system as as even kind of in some ways engineered to do exactly that.
