It was a commercial success, but initially not a critical hit. New York's critics were confounded and bored. 240 people walked out of the Capitol Lewis Theatre on Broadway. And Stanley Kubrick's reaction was like misery. He was like, ah, I fucked it up. Then he cut like 12 minutes or something. As it starts to commercially come out, it's one of those movies where it's like people are lining up around the box.
