Square Notes: The Sacred Music Podcast

CHAPTER

Child Oblation and Children's Music Education

Child oblation was often a decision made by an affluent family that one of the children would end up in a monastery at a pretty early age. Oblation, which goes back to the very early Middle Ages, was theologically considered to be a family giving a child as a gift to God. Some have rationalized this as almost an insurance policy, that that child becoming a permanent member of the community would in effect be capable steward of the property they had given to the monastery.
