Most of us have some kind of generally reservoir-based non-rebreather system. When you take a breath in, it hopes that you draw from that reservoir first. But in reality, you're drawing a whole bunch of room air around it. And the higher your work of breathing, the higher your peak inspiratory flow rate,. The more room air you're sucking around. That's when you start wanting to give things that outcompete ambient nitrogen.
