The word engineer has drifted very, very far away from a original meaning. There's no word for it before 1800. And yet now what Apple computer has a vice president of software engineering. The idea comes from Nate Rosenberg and David Maury with their studies of the machine tool industry in the 1840s, 1850s and 1860s in America.
