The State and the Market in the Early Modern Period
The last thinker that I cover in the book is Piketty. He uses the language of neoliberalism but fundamentally, what he's talking about is the sort of laissez-faire attitude. Which boils down to the state ought to do as little as possible when it comes to the regulation of markets. It's like minimalist state. Night watchmen, you might say. That's right. And I guess if you read the book, you'll see that that is a kind of simplistic and borderline deranged view of some of the things that very smart people have said about how the state should govern the market.
