Douglas Adams came up with the name for Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He was on vacation in Greece and couldn't find his towel so he incorporated that into the story. The elevator doors were constantly going up and down, which made him think of how elevators felt about this but there is no apparent reason why they do it.
